Top Questions to Ask in a Doula Consult

Hiring a doula can feel like a daunting task, especially if you’re a first-time parent or have never worked with a doula before. A doula will be with you during one of the most vulnerable times in your life. So how can you make sure the one you hire is the right fit?

The process of hiring a doula usually includes a free consult. This consult serves two purposes:

  1. for the doula to get to know you, your needs, and your desires for your birth, and to determine if they can provide the care you’re looking for

  2. for you, the potential client, to get to know the doula and decide if you feel comfortable with them.

Here’s a list of the top questions I recommend asking during your consult. These will give you a sense of the type of care you may receive from the doula you’re considering.

What training did you receive?

Depending on where you live, there may not be any certification requirements for doulas. Certification isn’t necessary for a doula to provide excellent care, especially if they have extensive experience. Decide what feels right for you. Doulas don’t perform medical tasks, so as long as they are following guidelines in your area and you feel comfortable with their training, that should be enough.

What is your birth philosophy?

Every doula has their own perspective on birth. It’s important to find someone whose philosophy aligns with your own values and preferences. You’ll want a doula who respects your choices and supports you throughout your birth journey. Look for someone who will listen and support your birth preferences without judgment. A doula’s role is to make sure you have the information you need to make confident, informed decisions.

What does your fee include?

Most doulas include a standard set of services included in their fees. In my opinion, a full doula package should include:

  • At least one prenatal appointment

  • The ability to reach out with questions throughout pregnancy

  • 24/7 on-call availability starting two weeks before your due date through two weeks after

  • Continuous labor support until your baby is born

  • At least 1 hour of immediate postpartum support

  • At least 1 postpartum visit

Many doulas also include help with creating a birth plan and provide local resources. Some doulas offer package options at different price points to make their services more accessible.

What if you can’t make it to my birth?

Life happens, and sometimes doulas can’t attend despite their best efforts. It’s important to know their backup plan. Do they work with another doula? If not, will they refund or partially refund you if they miss your birth?

Do you attend births at my birthing location?

This may sound simple, but it’s essential. If the doula doesn’t attend births at your chosen location, they’re not the right fit for you. Make sure they are comfortable and experienced with your birthing location.

When should I contact you?

Ask about communication: Can you reach out anytime with questions? How should you contact them if you think you’re in labor? Knowing their preferred method of communication will give you peace of mind when the big day arrives.

How will you work with my partner?

A doula should never replace a partner, but instead compliment them. Your birth partner knows you intimately and brings something unique to your support team. Does your doula recognize the value of your partner and work with them as a team? Will they also support your partner if needed, and teach them comfort measures?

What tools do you bring?

Many doulas use tools to provide natural pain relief and comfort in your labor. Ask your doula what’s in their “doula bag”. This will give you insight into the techniques they use. (And stay tuned for my upcoming post where I’ll share a peek inside a typical doula’s bag!)

Final thoughts:

You’ll find endless lists online of what to ask a doula, and while they’re helpful, the most important advice I can give you is this: trust your gut. Do you feel comfortable with this person? Could you imagine them being with you in one of your most vulnerable moments? If the answer is no, or even if something feels “off”, listen to your instincts and keep looking. Your comfort and connection with your doula matter. The right doula will make you feel supported, safe, and respected throughout your journey.
